The Kindness of Strangers (and Middle School...
I’m not going to lie. I had a pretty rough day today. But even before things went wrong, I was planning to write something about the random kindnesses of strangers and how it can really affect your day.
Random acts of kindness seem so much more important when you’re a foreigner in a strange country. I think it’s because usually, as foreigners who can’t speak Korean well,...

Weirdest Experience on the Subway Ever
I had just gotten on the Seoul orange line subway at Oksu (one stop away from Apgujeong) to meet my boyfriend for a cute date night in Sinsa when the strangest thing happened to me. I know that everyone has seen subway fights, or drunk people rolling around on the floor screaming (or is the last one just me?) but this really took the cake.
I first noticed something was up when the conductor...

A teacher just gave me her son's English essay to...
He is in his second year of high school and had the advantage of living in the US for two years while his father (her husband) taught at a university.
But I cannot, for the life of me, understand what he is talking about. Sample: “Water irises make illusion of rainbow on the big beautiful fall that against words of death or shade, plums, and dusky.” ???
EDIT: “which makes...

I love desk-warming!
I had no idea what ‘desk-warming’ was until I dame to Korea. At first, I thought the term was kind of stupid, but now I realize it fits perfectly. Desk-warming is when you are contractually obligated to show up at your school but you don’t actually have to teach any classes, so you just sit at your desk all day long. Is it called this because you’re camped out on your...

The Thing I Hate Most About Korea: MOSQUITOES
I never gave mosquitoes (모기) a second thought until I moved to Seoul. I would occasionally get mosquito bites back home. They would be small, itch for a few minutes, and then disappear.
Unfortunately, this is not the case with Korean mosquitoes, who are seriously ruining my life. I’m going to estimate that I spend about 2 hours a day thinking about mosquitoes and my itchy mosquito bites...

Um, what just happened?
FALL just happened.
Seoul’s weather is strange. I’ve been here over a year, so I’ve seen the changes of every season. Winter is bitterly cold and lasts forever. Last year, it was freezing cold from November to the beginning of April, although Korean people have told me that that sort of weather is unnatural. Spring lasted about a week, and followed a few weeks of torrential...

Muuido Time!
Gotta wake up kind of early to pack and go to Muuido, or Muui Island, where we’ve rented a pension for a big group of friends to celebrate Chuseok. Chuseok is Korea’s Thanksgiving, and everything will be closed that day, and most people will be traveling to visit their ancestral hometowns outside Seoul, so this seems like a good time to go. Really, no one should be there! Except for a...
Thursday
First day back at school and… ughh! Actually, I really shouldn’t be complaining because I just had a five-day vacation, but I’m a whiner. I only had four classes, and they were really easy, as I pretty much just sat around and answered their spelling and grammar questions as they wrote a story together. Each group started with the previous group’s sentence, so we ended up...
