Have love will travel: Canadia →
jennaonline: I’ve avoided posting about this topic—though I’ve certainly had multiple opportunities—for the obvious reason of wanting to avoid the inevitable sh*t storm of responses from angry Canadians who already seem to have their panties in a twist in the first place when it comes to Americans. Alas, I… I always agree with everything this woman says. We should be friends.  ...

World Citizen: Ugh. →
claretea: I completely lost it in my class this morning, and I never lose it. I cannot wait until my apathetic 3rd graders finally go to High School. My co-teachers keep saying that because they have finished exams they no longer want or need to study. So they don’t try, they sleep, and even when I give… It all depends on how good your co-teacher is. My good third grade co-teacher can...

My Third Birthday Party
I forgot to mention that yesterday, five of my favorite students (the fan club girls) called me outside my office and presented me with a cute pink Paris Baguette birthday cake (purchased by one of their mothers.) It even had candles. And they had poppers. They proceeded to devour most of the cake within seconds after the birthday song and smear most of the icing on each others’ faces, but...

Christmas Trees and Spanish Food
I am trying to lose a little weight so I can fit into the cute free size dress I bought in the Myeongdong subway station which I wrongly thought might fit my body when I purchased it. It doesn’t. (It also does not stretch. At all.) It doesn’t help that I have no time to go to the gym and that I’m always eating some really delicious food that is not good for me.  I met my...

비가 오다
It’s raining today and it makes me feel kind of sad, coupled with the fact that it’s only 5 PM and it’s already started getting dark. I would say I have seasonal affective disorder, but it’s no different from a Pennsylvania winter. (Actually it is really unusually warm right now. Thanks global warming, sorry polar bears.)  Whenever I’m sad, I start to really...

Score 1 for laziness
I have just gotten permission to do three weeks of English singing and drama camp. I will teach the girls to sing two songs. We will write a play together and then they will perform it. This involves minimal lesson planning and exertion on my part. They will choose the songs and make up the plot of the play.  If there are extra days, we will watch movies or play Apples to Apples. I DO NOT...

Is it normal in China to just talk during exams?
Writing on my phone to entertain myself/complain and make myself feel better on the bus ride home from Korean class. Hope there aren’t any typos. I am in a really annoyed mood because our Korean teacher hadn’t put our papers on our desks a minute before EVERY SINGLE CHINESE PERSON in the class started talking. During the exam. Not even whispering but talking at a normal volume. First...

Three Random Stories
I have no idea what’s going on at my school 99% of the time. When I do know what’s going on, it’s pretty weird. Here are three recent memories of weird things that have happened to me, or that I have been told by my students and co-workers. Every day in Korea is entertaining. 1. I had an interim substitute co-teacher while my normal, fatherly head teacher was out for a few...

Have you ever asked if a shoe store in Korea...
Me too. I don’t even bother to ask anymore. It’s just embarrassing. One of my school nicknames is “Big Foot Teacher.”  The Sookyee Big Size Shoe Store on GMarket has an awesome under-10,000 won holiday sale going on right now. The selection isn’t too good and most of the things you are going to want will not be available in your size, but if you wear over a 255 and...

Yesterday was my birthday
and it was kind of a crazy day.  I didn’t do anything Friday night except cook dinner (my Lotte Super had asparagus for the first time ever!), go to the gym, and watch some TV. I went to sleep before 12 because I am an old woman and am unable to stay up past midnight. I was awoken at 4 in the morning by a phone call from my boyfriend, who was still out drinking with his company coworkers....

The more I read this article, the more “Wait, what?” it becomes.  “the high school senior, 18, stabbed his mother, 51, in the throat with a kitchen knife in March and left her body to decompose in a room for eight months.” and “Police say that the mother resorted to violence and other means of torture including withholding food or sleep, when his grades failed to...

Party in the R.O.K.: FOOD. Turkey, mashed... →
girlinseoul: partyintherok: Coming home from their house which is practically in North Korea, I encountered two very typical late-night Korean scenarios. (OK, it was barely midnight, but still. It was Thursday. My bedtime is usually 11:30 on weeknights.) The first was a big, nasty kimchi sunflower splattered all over the top of the escalator. It was virtually inescapable. How I met my boyfriend (by popular request)

South Korea ratifies long-delayed US trade deal;...
It’s good to see that crazy politicians aren’t confined to the United States alone. This overgrown baby of a legislator in Seoul was so upset over the final approval of the US-Korea FTA that he set off a tear gas bomb in the legislative chamber. And then cried and screamed and had a little hissy fit as the police dragged him away. You know who never does dumb stuff like this? Female...

Destiny.
I went to Myeongdong last night. I always say I am never going to go there again, but I end up there once every one or two weeks. Most of the stores have Christmas decorations up in the windows, and everything was red and green and...

Sometimes, Korean men don't know when to quit.
There was this guy, “Daniel,” who I met on a meeting with my friend. Over a year ago. He didn’t speak more English than “Hello” and I had just moved to Korea and couldn’t speak more Korean than “안녕.” We had absolutely no attraction or chemistry. He smelled like a walking cigarette. Despite all this, I ended up meeting him once or twice after the...

I hate doing stuff like this.
Finally sent an email to my buddy/head teacher about my ‘problem coworker.’ After our last class when they just screamed the whole time, never listened to me, she never said a word to them to make them be quiet, and she just left in the middle without telling me, leaving me really confused and angry.  I think I was fairly mature. I said that I would like to have more classes with the...

Like The Tree by Oh Sae Young
As trees get along with trees, so we should live, as boughs holding each other’s hands endure a long cold season. As trees look upwards to a clear sky, so we should live, as leaves open up their hearts to take in lovely sunlight. As trees grow amid rain and wind, so we should grow, as their deep roots tenaciously withstand a ferocious storm. As trees by themselves can discern each season, so we...
